The Dutch government offers different types of support for entrepreneurs, from money to making life easier. If your idea meets the requirements for one of the subsidy programmes You can apply to the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) for a grant.

Subsidies are essentially government support of certain industries or activities that might not be financially viable without this support. Subsidies usually are offered to help struggling industries or to promote new developments or to promote specific policies or social goods. They can be financially successful but they will be costly to other groups (for instance the food subvention aids farmers, but increases prices for consumers) They may also fail economically, yet achieve objectives in terms of culture and political.

Subsidies provided by the government can come in many forms. They include tax breaks, grants and rebates in addition to direct cash payments to suppliers or customers. They can also be indirect, for instance, road taxes that are paid by all motorists, rather than just those who use roads or railway track access fees that are not imposed exclusively for passenger trains.

The advocates of subsidies claim that they can increase the effectiveness of an economy by protecting it from international competition or by promoting local production. They can also be useful to counteract market failures, such as externalities or information inequalities. However, critics say that these policies can have negative effects, from corruption to inequality, and that they impede more efficient and equitable public spending. They also create perverse incentives. For instance, a firm that receives a government subsidy will have an incentive to give money to politicians, contributing to “regulatory capture” and rent seeking.
