Country farm management and business management is the process of planning every aspect of an agricultural enterprise with a view to maximising the profits and income. It is a difficult task which involves a wide range of human, technical and economic analytical and conceptual skills. The difficulty is that the result of any action is contingent on circumstances that can’t be predicted or guaranteed and requires flexibility to deal with uncertainty.
Business management and farming are closely linked and the farmer who succeeds is able to consider both aspects. For instance, will need to plan production in accordance with market prices and climatic conditions while at the same being a successful financial manager, planning ways to raise funds to fund the business in the near future, and monitoring progress towards the goals that are set.
It is also important that the proprietor has enough income from other sources to cover operating expenses and provide a margin of safety against unexpected emergencies or events. In addition the proper public facilities should be made available to accommodate customers and visitors (e.g. parking signage, education, assistance for customers).
Many farms and ranches provide an educational experience for visitors that concentrates on fiber and food production, land stewardship and the history of agriculture. This is an excellent way to retain and attract customers, and it’s often appreciated by the general public. It is possible to get funds from a local or state agency to help pay for the costs of education.
