Dental Technologies and Innovations
The dental profession is experiencing profound changes with the rise of new technology and innovations. The wise dentist will be aware and, if appropriate, adapt to these technologies but only after having an understanding of legal issues.
Digital radiography, for example has replaced X-rays using tools that provide more precise image while providing patients with less radiation. Intraoral cameras allow dentists to take clear photos of difficult-to-see areas within the oral cavity. This allows patients to better understand their options for treatment and allows them to take better care of themselves at home.
Other developments include CAD/CAM systems that make it possible to create custom-made bridges and crowns, without the necessity of messy molds. Dental lasers are used for a variety of reasons such as precise gum contouring, painless detection of cavities, and more. The creation of biomaterials that are more resistant to wear and tear, and that can be customized in color and translucency to the natural teeth of patients, offers new solutions for restoration of teeth and periodontal disease treatment.
Teledentistry allows the elderly, disabled and people living in remote areas to gain access to dental services. The use of a telehealth platform allows dentists to take images and record clinical notes as well as consultations with patients via video chat software. Dental labs are also being transformed through 3D printing. This allows them to print custom prosthetics and surgical guide. This can reduce the time of turnaround and allows for improved precision-fitting and accurate restorations.
